Job Description

COMPANY OVERVIEW

Our client is a family-founded, heavy civil construction firm based in Glastonbury, CT. Since shifting from residential home building to civil site work in 2012, the company has grown from 5 to over 55 team members and has become a trusted partner on some of Connecticut’s largest highway and drainage projects.

With a reputation for delivering high-quality work, the company now focuses entirely on public infrastructure projects—specifically civil utility and site development. Their team recently completed more than 46,000 linear feet of drainage and water pipe installation, earning strong recognition in the Connecticut market.

What truly sets our client apart is their culture of compassion—for the quality of their work, for their clients, and especially for their people. The leadership team believes in empowering field crews, fostering a team-oriented environment, and treating everyone with respect. They invest in innovation, technology, and union benefits for field staff, while maintaining a humble and collaborative culture.

ROLE SUMMARY

As the company continues to win larger projects and manage long-term contracts, our client is hiring a full-time Civil Estimator to join their team. This individual will own the bid process and help maintain a healthy backlog of work. Reporting to the Operations Manager, this role will work closely with project managers and superintendents to evaluate new opportunities, develop detailed estimates, and support project transitions.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, team-focused environment and wants to play a key role in a growing, values-driven company.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Evaluate public bid opportunities by monitoring bid portals and identifying high-percentage fits
  • Perform detailed project take-offs using HeavyBid and other tools
  • Build and maintain relationships with subcontractors and suppliers to secure competitive pricing
  • Prepare cost estimates, proposals, and formal bid submissions
  • Lead internal bid reviews and coordinate proposal submissions
  • Collaborate with project teams for successful project handoffs
  • Assist with change orders and occasional project management support, as needed
  • Participate in pre-bid site walks and spend time in the field for project familiarity

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • 5–10 years of experience in civil estimating and takeoffs
  • Background in site development, utilities, or heavy civil construction preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field is a plus
  • Proficiency in estimating software (HCSS HeavyBid experience preferred)
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Self-starter with a strong work ethic and ownership mentality
  • Collaborative problem-solver with a continuous improvement mindset
  • Proven ability to build and maintain vendor and subcontractor relationships
  • High dependability and ability to meet deadlines consistently
