This position requires strong experience in industrial electrical systems and design. Knowledge of UL and IEEE standards is beneficial. Experience with wiring diagrams, 3-phase power systems, medium and low voltage is a plus.

Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer

Work Schedule: Dayshift Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm

Position Summary: The Mechanical Engineer I works in conjunction with senior engineers to plan, conceptualize, and

create mechanical designs for projects based on quotes and customer design specifications. This includes reviewing and

creating technical drawings in CAD software, performing engineering calculations, and providing engineering support

for their designs on the manufacturing floor

Essential Functions - Other Duties May Be Assigned.

  • Create and review mechanical designs for components and electromechanical assemblies using SolidWorks and AutoCAD, ensuring manufacturability and alignment with customer specifications.
  • Use Epicor ERP system to coordinate material requirements, review BOMs, and support production planning based on project timelines and budget requirements.
  • Prepare detailed 2D drawings and 3D models using engineering software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Solid Edge) to support manufacturing processes, including sheet metal programming for laser cutting and bending.
  • Perform mechanical and structural design calculations (with guidance), using software such as MathCAD, RISA, and Ansys, to ensure compliance with ASME, ASTM, AISC, and other relevant codes.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers and cross-functional teams , including manufacturing and project management, to resolve design challenges and support product development.
  • Support cost estimation and material selection by working with vendors and using Epicor to balance functionality, cost, and lead time for mechanical components.
  • Interpret and revise technical documentation including drawings, blueprints, and schematics to align with customer expectations and production needs.
  • Participate in product troubleshooting and recommend design modifications to improve product robustness and reduce system malfunctions.
  • Utilize Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams) for documentation, reporting, and cross-functional communication.
  • Comply with IE’s Quality Management System (QMS) and Safety Program , including adherence to the company’s Core Values and Cardinal Safety Rules.

  • Education & Experience :
    Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited institution is required. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. EIT certification is preferred.
  • Technical Skills :
    • Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical drawings, schematics, blueprints, and technical specifications.
    • Basic understanding of electrical circuits and common industry symbols.
    • Proficiency in design calculations related to dimensions, loads, tolerances, and material properties.
    • Strong understanding of manufacturing methods and cost impacts.
  • Software Proficiency :
    Familiarity with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), and ERP systems (such as Epicor) is essential. Experience with Adobe tools and engineering analysis software (like Ansys or RISA) is a plus.
  • Math & Analytical Ability :
    Capable of solving practical design problems using basic algebra, geometry, and standard engineering formulas. Must be comfortable calculating ratios, percentages, volumes, and tolerances.
  • Communication & Collaboration :
    Strong written and verbal communication skills. Able to write reports, follow safety documentation, and collaborate effectively with engineering, manufacturing, and project teams.
  • Work Environment & Physical Demands :
    • Office-based cubicle setting with occasional visits to manufacturing areas.
    • May be exposed to moderate noise, moving mechanical parts, and industrial environments.
    • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally and perform standard physical tasks such as walking, sitting, standing, and using hands for extended periods.
  • Safety Compliance :
    Must follow all company safety standards and report unsafe conditions immediately.
